The Government of Canada is taking significant steps to protect the integrity of its immigration system and ensure that it continues to attract the best talent globally. As part of ongoing efforts to combat fraud, Immigration Minister Marc Miller announced that starting in spring 2025, Express Entry candidates will no longer receive additional points for having a job offer.
This temporary measure aims to curb the illegal buying and selling of Labour Market Impact Assessments (LMIAs), which have been a concern within the immigration system. By eliminating the incentive for this type of fraud, the Government hopes to create a more transparent, fair, and secure process for those seeking permanent residence in Canada.
The changes will apply to all candidates in the Express Entry pool, including those currently working in Canada temporarily. However, candidates who have already received an invitation to apply or whose applications are in progress will not be affected. Once implemented, this measure will apply to new candidates as well as those with job offers already in the system.
Why This Change Matters
Canada’s immigration system plays a crucial role in the country’s economic success. By ensuring that skilled workers can contribute to key sectors, Canada can continue to grow. The Government is committed to building a strong, responsive immigration system that benefits both newcomers and the Canadian economy.
Minister Marc Miller emphasized the importance of continuing to attract the best and brightest to Canada, while also ensuring fairness and integrity in the selection process.
“We are taking important steps to reduce fraud while continuing to attract the skilled talent our economy needs. Immigration has always been a cornerstone of Canada’s success, and we remain committed to welcoming the best and brightest to Canada so that everyone has access to the quality jobs, homes, and supports they need to thrive,” said Minister Miller.
What Does This Mean for Express Entry Candidates?
For candidates already in the Express Entry pool, including those with job offers, this change will impact their chances of receiving additional points. However, it will not affect those who have already received invitations to apply (ITAs) or have applications in progress. Once the changes take effect, any new applicants or those entering the pool with job offers will no longer benefit from additional points associated with having a job offer.
A Stronger and Fairer Immigration System
This new measure is part of Canada’s broader efforts to build a fair and transparent immigration system. With the government’s commitment to ongoing improvements, candidates who wish to immigrate to Canada can be assured that the process will continue to prioritize those who have the right skills and experience to contribute to the economy.
Express Entry remains the key application system for those looking to immigrate permanently through the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Federal Skilled Trades Program, the Canadian Experience Class, and part of the Provincial Nominee Program.
Canada continues to make strides toward creating a responsive and well-managed immigration system. As part of this effort, the Government of Canada is committed to attracting immigrants based on their skills, knowledge, and ability to contribute to Canada’s long-term economic success.
